A newspaper delivery man in Columbia, South Carolina noticed he was being followed by the driver of a black Ford Explorer. The deliveryman called police and Officer Alexander Broder who had been on his 5th day as a police officer, stopped the vehicle driven by Blakely Hilton Jernigan. As the officer approached, Jernigan shot the officer in the chest at close range. Jernigan then fled and was shot and killed by a SWAT team after a standoff. Jernigan had explosives strapped to himself. Jernigan’s father had been called on to help negotiate. Jernigan came out through the back door and fired an AK-47 at two of the SWAT officers before being killed. A bomb squad had to disarm the bomb strapped to his body.
