A man who was fatally shot in his home in Antioch on Monday has been identified as 26-year-old David Johnson, a sergeant with the Contra Costa County coroner’s office said today.Police said the alleged shooter, 30-year-old Kevin Gunning, showed up at a house in the 2200 block of Pinenut Way where Johnson lived with his stepfather, Gunning’s ex-girlfriend and possibly other roommates.
The ex-girlfriend escaped from the house and called police at about 9:35 p.m. to report that Gunning had gotten into an argument with Johnson and other residents, and that she had heard gunshots inside the house, police said.Moments later, she said, she saw Gunning run from the house, according to police. When officers arrived, they found Johnson dead from multiple gunshot wounds. Gunning was arrested at about 12:30 a.m. at a separate location in Antioch.
As of this morning, criminal charges had not yet been filed.Antioch police Sgt. Steve Bias said investigators have information that Gunning, who may have also lived in the house at one time, had been in a minor altercation with Johnson about a month earlier, but it was unclear whether that dispute had led to the shooting.Police also noted that the victim and Gunning’s ex-girlfriend were not romantically involved.
