Police have recovered a second set of cremated human remains stolen from an Alameda church while the family was preparing to hold a funeral service last month. The remains were in two boxes inside a backpack that was stolen from Christ Episcopal Church on Santa Clara Avenue the afternoon of March 5.

It was not clear whether the thief knew what was in the backpack. One of the boxes was found four days later in the 400 block of 29th Avenue in Oakland, near Interstate Highway 880. A good Samaritan spotted the box and reported it after seeing media coverage of the theft.

The second box was found Friday under some ivy near the main entrance to the church. Police said the remains were intact and that church staff members believe the box was dropped off sometime in the past week. The remains are being returned to the family.
