On Monday, April 11, 2011, Steven Free, 32, of San Francisco, plead guilty to two counts of felony vandalism and two counts of misdemeanor vandalism, in connection with a 2009 graffiti investigation by the San Jose Police Department’s graffiti unit. Free, who goes by the tagging moniker “GIRAFA,” was arrested in October 2009 on ten counts of felony vandalism, with damages totaling $38,000 to both city and private property. The investigation revealed Free was one of the most prolific graffiti taggers in the Bay Area at the time. As part of Free’s plea agreement, he was ordered to pay $38,000.00 in restitution to the City of San Jose and the owners of the private properties. He also agreed to three years of probation.
