Police are investigating the murder of a Watsonville man who was shot and killed Saturday night as possible retaliation to a stabbing early the same morning, officials said. The 20-year-old, whose name has not yet been released, died from multiple gunshot injuries Saturday night after checking into the emergency room of Watsonville Community Hospital, officials said.

Witnesses called police after hearing gunfire near an apartment building located at 222 Clifford Ave. just after 10:30 p.m. Police were already responding to the area because of complaints about a party and loud music a couple minutes earlier. Officers detained several people at the party, who were all later released. When the hospital called police to report the 20-year-old’s fatal shooting, police connected the scene of the shooting to the party.

Watsonville police are also investigating the connection of the murder with the stabbing of a 17-year-old boy at a trailer park at about 1 a.m. Saturday, officers said.Five or six men attacked the boy and two others during a robbery at 501 S. Green Valley Road. The suspects, who were driving a dark-colored minivan, approached the boy, along with a 16-year-old boy and a 19-year-old man, while the victims were walking through the trailer park, officials said.

The suspects stole a wallet and a cell phone and stabbed the 17-year-old multiple times before driving away in the minivan, officers said.Watsonville police found the boy lying in the road inside the trailer park, and because of the seriousness of his injuries, he was flown to a local hospital, according to police. As of early Sunday morning, the 17-year-old was in stable condition, officers said.

No other injuries were reported from the attack.Police are investigating the murder Saturday night as a retaliation attempt for the stabbing. Although they have not been directly linked, both cases appear to be gang-related, according to police. The only suspect information police have released is the five or six suspects from the stabbing are Hispanic men last seen driving away from the scene in a dark-colored minivan. Police are also searching for more suspect information in the homicide case. The only information gathered is that three men were seen running away from the apartment building.
