* Oakland Police Searching for Bomb on Amtrak Train
Published by Junior Staff Writer on March 29, 2011
Authorities are searching an Amtrak train and station in Oakland tonight after receiving a secondhand report of a bomb on a train bound for Bakersfield, an Oakland police officer said. Officers responded to the Oakland-Jack London Square Amtrak station located at 2nd and Alice streets after receiving the secondhand report at 5:32 p.m. of a bomb threat, Officer J. Moore said. It was unclear who reported the threat, Moore said, but that the report indicated an explosive could detonate at the station sometime between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Police contacted the California Highway Patrol, who began a search for the device at about 7 p.m., Moore said. As of 7:45 p.m., there were no updates on whether or not a device had been located. A representative from Amtrak said that the agency did not have information available about the nature of the bomb threat, but that police activity at the station forced an evacuation of the station at about 6 p.m. Amtrak spokeswoman Danelle Hunter said the agency also evacuated 13 passengers from the train, No. 718, which was scheduled to leave Oakland at 5:50 p.m. Hunter said that the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office was assisting Oakland and Amtrak police with the response.
