A man who was shot in San Jose on Wednesday night and died at a hospital early Thursday has been identified by police as 20-year-old Jeffery Melanio. The shooting was reported at about 9:10 p.m. Wednesday in the 900 block of Lundy Avenue, police said. About 10 minutes later, a shooting victim arrived at Regional Medical Center of San Jose, where he had been taken by friends, according to police. The victim, later identified as Melanio, succumbed to his injuries at 1:14 a.m. Thursday, police said. Investigators learned the victim had been shot at the Lundy Avenue location while standing with some friends in the parking lot of a strip mall. The group was approached by a second group, and after a verbal altercation, a suspect took out a handgun and shot Melanio, police said. The suspects fled the scene and have not been arrested, and no detailed suspect description was immediately available today, police Sgt. Jason Dwyer said. The shooting was San Jose’s 13th homicide of 2011.
