* San Jose Police Partner with Mexican Consulate for Domestic Violence Seminar

Published by on March 24, 2011

Fifteen women walk into the Mexican Consulate in San Jose each week to come forward as victims of domestic violence, a consulate spokeswoman said today. Many Mexican immigrants are afraid to report domestic violence because of their own illegal status, Mexican Consulate spokeswoman Abia Olivia said. To combat this fear, the consulate partnered with San Jose police and hosted a seminar to inform the Hispanic community about legal action and assistance domestic violence victims can receive. This session, which is open to men and women of all races, began at 5 p.m. this evening at the Mexican Consulate in San Jose, located at 2125 Zanker Road. Regardless of immigration status, people have the right to report any type of crime without fear, Officer Jose Garcia said. Garcia said the Police Department recognizes the importance of connecting with community members and assuring their safety when reporting crimes. “When you lose the trust of the community, you jeopardize public safety,” he said. San Jose police can cultivate this trust by partnering with the consulate, Garcia said. The Consulate General of Mexico in San Jose provides protection and assistance to Mexican nationals who reside in Santa Clara, San Benito, Santa Cruz, and Monterey counties. The consulate also hosts two immigration events every month, when lawyers provide free legal advice for victims. The next event will be Friday at 8 a.m. at the Mexican Consulate in San Jose.
