* Former Brentwood Math Teacher Darin Price Pleads No Contest in Attempted Statutory Rape Case

Published by on March 24, 2011

A former Brentwood math teacher and girls basketball coach pleaded no contest last week in connection to charges that he tried to solicit a female student for sex, prosecutors said. Darin Price, 39, pleaded no contest on April 17 to felony attempted statutory rape, Deputy District Attorney Mary Blumberg said. As part of his plea agreement, Price will be sentenced in May to 90 days in county jail, four years formal probation and he will have to register as a sex offender for life. The sex offender registration requirement will, among other conditions, prevent him from ever teaching in California again, Blumberg said. Price had originally been charged with two felonies and a misdemeanor that could have landed him in prison.

The charges stemmed from a January 2010 incident that happened at Heritage High School in Brentwood where Price taught. A 17 year old student was taking a math makeup test in his classroom when Price put a $100 bill on her desk and asked her to show him what he referred to as her “kitty,” Blumberg said. Blumberg said the victim didn’t know what to do and thought Price must be joking so she tried to laugh it off. But then Price put a second $100 bill on her desk and told her he wasn’t joking, Blumberg said. The victim went home and told her parents about the incident and her parents called police.

Police investigators used the victim’s cell phone to contact Price by text message and, pretending to be the victim, wrote that she had changed her mind. They set up a place to meet that night to have sex. When Price showed up at the designated spot, police arrested him and found that he had brought a bottle of strawberry vodka with him along with $200 and a box of condoms, Blumberg said. Price has agreed to surrender to serve his jail term on his sentencing date, which is scheduled for May 3. He is currently out of custody on a $100,000 bond. Price’s attorney did not return a call for comment this afternoon.
