* Richard Allen Montgomery is suspected of receiving $14,000 from an 84 year-old Santa Rosa resident

Sonoma County authorities are looking for elderly residents who might have been victims of a Santa Rosa man’s alleged handyman and construction project scams. Richard Allen Montgomery, 42, is scheduled to be tried in Sonoma County Superior Court later this month for burglary and elder financial abuse. Sonoma County sheriff’s Sgt. Mike Raasch said Montgomery is suspected of receiving $14,000 from an 84-year-old Santa Rosa resident for work he did not perform for a driveway repair and construction project in December. The resident contacted authorities on Jan. 4. Montgomery was on parole for grand theft, elder financial abuse and burglary at the time of that alleged scam, Raasch said. Court records show the previous offenses occurred on Oct. 4, 2001. Montgomery pleaded no contest to those charges on Oct. 25, 2002, and was sentenced on Dec. 4, 2002, to nine years and eight months in prison. The judge suspended execution of the prison term and sentenced Montgomery to five years probation and 12 months in county jail. Montgomery’s probation was revoked when he failed to report to a residential treatment center. He admitted the probation violation on Aug. 9, 2005, and he was sentenced to the nine-year prison term on Sept. 1, 2005. Sheriff’s detectives have identified four other elderly people who are believed to be victims of Montgomery’s alleged construction and handyman scams, Raasch said. Montgomery, who was doing business as “The Fix It Crew,” is not a licensed contractor, Raasch said. Once the repair and construction work started, Montgomery found other things that were allegedly wrong with the elderly victims’ residences but he performed little or no services, Raasch said. The sheriff’s office has submitted its investigation regarding the other four alleged victims to the Sonoma County District Attorney’s Office, Raasch said.
