A man has been arrested on suspicion of killing his 67-year-old roommate in San Francisco’s lower Nob Hill neighborhood last week, a police spokesman said today. Waheed Kesmatyer, 24, is suspected of fatally stabbing Jack Baker in the 1000 block of Bush Street, San Francisco police Officer Eric Chiang said.Police found Baker, 67, when they responded to a request for a well-being check at the home at about 6:15 p.m. on Feb. 11.

Physical evidence at the scene was linked to Kesmatyer, who had been roommates with Baker since October 2010, Chiang said. Kesmatyer was being held in Marin County Jail on unrelated charges and was served with the arrest warrant for murder. He will be extradited to San Francisco, but Chiang did not know when.

San Francisco Supervisor David Chiu, whose district contains the neighborhood where the murder occurred, spoke about Baker during this week’s board meeting, saying he was a local artist who drew murals and was well-liked by neighbors. The murder was San Francisco’s 13th of 2011.
