Published by Junior Staff Writer on January 30, 2011
A bank robber took a woman hostage during a robbery of the Capitol One bank on University Boulevard in Takoma Park, Maryland. During the robbery he pistol whipped a bank employee when the employee tried to disarm him.
Takoma Park police say the suspect had something that looked like a bomb taped to himself. A suspicious device also was reported inside the bank but both devices ended up being plastic foam.
The suspect was holding a gun to the hostage’s head when he used her as a shield to walk out of the bank. The video shows the dye pack exploding as he was approaching the parking lot curb.
The video then shows the robber walking out of the bank with the woman. As he was backing away from police, he tripped over a pile of snow. The woman managed to escape and ran toward police officers. The robber chased her past the police officers who opened fire killing him. One police officer was wounded in the leg and can be seen limping away after the shootout.
