Officers arrested a man Thursday for reportedly harassing juveniles in a Santa Cruz park and striking one of them in the head in mid January, according to Santa Cruz police. On Jan. 16 at 2:10 p.m., four male juveniles were in San Lorenzo Park when the suspect, identified as 56-year-old Santa Cruz resident Chester Charlton, approached the boys, police said. Charlton overheard the boys talking about going swimming and asked if he could join them, police said. The suspect then said that they could “wrestle” and made sexual comments to the boys, police said. The boys began yelling at Charlton to leave the park and police said that the suspect ended up hitting one of the boys on the right side of his head during the confrontation. The boys followed the suspect to a white camper style Volkswagen van parked on Dakota Avenue. The suspect and another person who was inside the van fled the scene. The van was last seen heading south on Dakota Avenue and turning west on Soquel Avenue, according to police. Following an investigation, police identified Charlton as the suspect and he was arrested without incident just after midnight on Thursday in the 1900 block of Ocean Street. The suspect was booked into the Santa Cruz County Jail for child annoying and battery, police said.
