The two men fatally shot in South San Francisco on Wednesday evening have been identified by the San Mateo County coroner’s office as Omar Cortez and Gonzalo Avalos.Cortez, 18, and Avalos, 19, both South San Francisco residents, were among six people shot near the intersection of Eighth Lane and Linden Avenue at around 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, police said.
The other four victims, between the ages of 15 and 20, were taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where one was reported to be in critical condition as of late this morning, according to police.Witnesses told police they saw three male suspects driving away from the shooting in a dark colored early 2000s-model Chevrolet Impala with tinted windows.”The full resources of the city will be brought to bear to apprehend the perpetrators,” South San Francisco Mayor Kevin Mullin said in a statement.
The San Mateo County gang intelligence unit is actively engaged in assisting local police with the investigation, Mullin said.Police are asking anyone with information that might help the investigation to contact South San Francisco police at (650) 877-8900.The mayor said the Police Department is stepping up patrols in the neighborhood where the shooting occurred and asked the community to participate in efforts to stem gang activity.”The cycle of violence must be stopped and it will take the efforts of an entire community to do so,” Mullin said.
