A teenager was arrested in Monterey early Friday morning after a resident found him allegedly ransacking a vehicle, police said. Police received a call at about 3:30 a.m. Friday about a suspect rummaging through an unlocked car at a home in the 100 block of Seeno Street. The resident confronted the suspect, who then fled. The car was found to be ransacked, with multiple items of property stolen, according to police. Officers responded and began an extended search that ended around 5 a.m. when an officer spotted a shirtless suspect at the foot bridge near the Lower Presidio. The suspect was detained after trying to hide, and was identified as Shawn Denny, 19, of Gonzales. Denny was identified by the resident as the thief, police said. He was booked into Monterey County Jail on suspicion of petty theft with prior offenses, and being under the influence of a controlled substance.
