A man was arrested Friday afternoon when a Monterey County sheriff’s deputy spotted a car that had been reported stolen. The deputy was driving west on Elm Avenue near Third Street at about 12:20 p.m. Friday when he saw a white Ford Taurus in front of him. The deputy did a registration check of the car and found it had been reported stolen out of Santa Cruz, according to the sheriff’s office. The deputy followed the vehicle, which eventually pulled into a driveway in the 200 block of Chardonnay Drive. Julio Rivera, 36, who was inside the car, was contacted by the deputy and admitted taking the car, but said his friend had given him permission to borrow it, according to the sheriff’s office. Rivera was arrested on suspicion of possession of a stolen vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office.
