A domestic dispute over child custody resulted in the arrest of a Prunedale man after he allegedly struck the children’s mother and grandmother with his car Thursday night, according to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office. Brett Reed, 47, was assisting his brother-in-law, Seleso Ruiz Jr., outside of 38 Frisch Road in unincorporated Monterey County at about 6 p.m., the sheriff’s office said. Reed and Ruiz were inside a 2006 silver Chrysler Sebring attempting to leave with the children when the children’s mother, Jennifer Roberts, and her mother, Linda Bryant, came outside and stood in front of the car. Roberts and Bryant attempted to convince the men to leave the children at the house, according to the sheriff’s office, but Reed allegedly put the Sebring’s transmission in drive, lurched the vehicle forward, and struck both women with the car. Then Reed allegedly backed the car up several feet, raced forward onto a lawn, and struck Bryant a second time as she tried to escape to safety, according to the sheriff’s office. Although Reed and Ruiz then left the scene of the assault, deputies later tracked down and arrested Reed on suspicion of two counts of  assault with a deadly weapon. Bryant was transported by ambulance to Salinas Valley Memorial
Hospital, where she was treated for minor injuries and released. Roberts was transported to the same hospital by family members and was also released after being treated for minor injuries.
