Police in San Mateo today released a sketch of a suspect sought in connection with a Nov. 14 carjacking at Hillsdale Shopping Center. The carjacking took place on the upper parking lot of the shopping center above Sears at around 8:30 p.m., when a Hispanic man in his 20s brandished a black semi-automatic handgun and demanded the victim’s car, according to San Mateo police. The victim called 911, and responding police officers apparently spotted the stolen car being driven through the area. The suspect did not yield to police and instead drove off, reaching speeds of up to 100 mph. Police terminated their pursuit out of concern for public safety. The stolen car was later found abandoned. Investigators believe the carjacking was an isolated incident and reassured the public that San Mateo police are conducting regular safety patrols at Hillsdale Shopping Center and other shopping areas. Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the suspect, who is around 5 feet 8 inches tall with short hear. He was seen wearing a black hoodie.
