* Alejo Alegre Given 33 Years in Prison for Robbing a Store with His Son

A former Norteno gang member was sentenced to 33 years in prison Friday for robbing a convenience store with his teenage son last year, according to the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office. Alejo Alegre, Jr., his 16-year-old son, and a parolee stole $500 and a laptop computer from the store on Nov. 25, 2009, the district attorney’s office said. Alegre, 38, and his son robbed the store owner and his two teenage children at gunpoint. He fired his gun into the ceiling during the robbery, the district attorney’s office said. The robbery was captured on surveillance tapes, which allowed police to identify the suspects. The son was tried as an adult and sentenced to nine years and eight months in prison, the district attorney’s office said. Alegre was given a higher sentence due to his “obvious position of leadership in the crime,” discharge of the gun, and extensive criminal record, including one strike for robbery, the district attorney’s office said. The son is reportedly a known member of the Nortenos.
