The Santa Rosa Police department arrested 16 people on Saturday night when officers conducted a DUI/Driver’s License checkpoint, but none of the arrests were for driving under the influence, police said. Five hundred forty-eight vehicles passed through the Saturday evening checkpoint at the intersection of Santa Rosa and Barham avenues, police said. Twenty-four of those drivers required further screening to determine the status of their driver’s licenses, police said. Of those, 11 were found to be driving without licenses and four more were using suspended licenses, police said. Those 15 drivers were all arrested for their license violations and their vehicles were taken for 30-day impoundment, police said. One of those drivers was also booked for an outstanding warrant, they said. Fifteen drivers received field sobriety testing, but none were arrested for driving under the influence, police said. One person was arrested for public intoxication when he attempted to hide from officers behind Willie Bird’s Restaurant on Santa Rosa Avenue just south of the checkpoint, police said. The checkpoint, which was meant to remove impaired drivers from the road and raise public awareness about the adverse consequences of drunk driving, was the “second of many that will be conducted throughout the year in Santa Rosa,” police said. The dragnet is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
