A wheelchair-bound man who was killed in an apparent gang-related shooting in Salinas on Wednesday night has been identified by the Monterey County coroner’s office as Jose Chavez Vasquez. Police responded shortly before 9:15 p.m. Wednesday to a report of shots fired in the area of Orchard and Del Monte avenues. Officers arrived to find Vasquez, 33, of Salinas, in a wheelchair next to the curb, dead from gunshot wounds to the head and upper torso, according to police. Witnesses said a vehicle drove past Vasquez and at least one person inside the car began shooting.
