Authorities have apprehended an apparently suicidal man who brought traffic to a halt on the Bay Bridge this morning when he claimed to have explosives in his SUV, according to the California Highway Patrol. The incident began at about 7 a.m. in the westbound lanes west of the center anchorage.”This guy was threatening to blow up the Bay Bridge and now he’s standing on the side of the rail and threatening to jump off the bridge,” CHP Sgt. Trent Cross said at about 7:45 a.m.About 15 minutes later, the man was taken into custody.A man claiming to be the person on the bridge called local radio station KCBS’ Phone Force line and said he was stopped on the bridge with his daughter and had explosives and a gun. KCBS producer Ted Goldberg said the man had told the radio station that he was upset because his wife had been cheating on him and was going to leave him. Cross said the man had released his young daughter, who is now safe with authorities. “He let her out of the car,” Cross said. The CHP was able to speak to the man by phone, Cross said.”We were talking to him by phone and he hung up,” he said The U.S. Coast Guard has responded to the incident.”We’ve closed the waterway under the bridge and have established a safety zone,” Coast Guard Lt. Steve Warner said.Meanwhile, many westbound motorists are stuck on the bridge. Some were getting out of their cars and walking around on the span.
