A driver who California Highway Patrol officers suspect may have been driving drunk injured a pregnant woman in a hit-and-run crash on a Sunnyvale freeway Friday night. Witness reports to the CHP indicated that a black Acura spun out on southbound U.S. Highway 101 just south of North Fair Oaks Avenue at about 9:30 p.m. after it was struck by a white Chevy SUV, California Highway Patrol Officer Ralph Caggiano said. The pregnant driver of the Acura requested an ambulance and complained of pain to her mouth and chin, Caggiano said. Sunnyvale firefighters had to temporarily close the rightmost lane of Highway 101 as they extricated the woman from the rear of the Acura, which sustained heavy damage. The woman was transported to Stanford University Medical Center, but Caggiano said the extent of her injuries was unknown. Broken glass and debris littered two lanes of the roadway after the Chevy struck several other vehicles before exiting the freeway and striking a pole some two miles away in Santa Clara, Caggiano said. At 9:42 p.m., the Chevy slammed into a pole on Great America Parkway at Tasman Drive, Caggiano said, and Santa Clara police officers responded to the scene. The driver of the Chevy was transported by ambulance to Regional Medical Center of San Jose, where the CHP requested a blood technician to administer tests that will determine the driver’s blood alcohol content. Caggiano said the CHP plans to seek felony hit-and-run charges and — depending on the outcome of the blood work — may also charge the driver with driving under the influence.
