A would-be diamond thief was nabbed by Campbell police officers Thursday evening after the suspect crashed his vehicle into a tree, police said.Officers responded to Joe Escobar Diamonds located at 450 E. Hamilton Ave. shortly before 7 p.m. for reports of a robbery in progress.Employees told police that a suspect brandishing a handgun fled with jewelry, and arriving officers spotted a vehicle speeding away from the scene. Officers were unable to stop the vehicle, and pursuit gave way, but was short-lived because the suspect crashed his 2009 Chevrolet Impala into a tree at North Central and David avenues, police said. The suspect — 26-year-old Alex Andrade, of San Jose — was taken into custody and transported to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center for treatment, police said.Officers also arrested a woman they determined was Andrade’s accomplice, 19-year-old Ana Romo, also of San Jose. Both Andrade and Romo were booked into Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of armed robbery, conspiracy, evading a peace officer, and resisting arrest.
