Police arrested a 17-year-old Eureka boy suspected of fatally shooting a store clerk during the robbery of a Watsonville market on Tuesday. The suspect walked into the Fiesta Latino Market at 451 E. Beach St. shortly after 1 p.m., spoke with the clerk, and then left. A few minutes later, the suspect returned with a handgun and demanded money from the clerk. Although the clerk complied, the suspect shot the clerk point-blank in the chest before he fled, police said. The clerk, 32-year-old Yahya Saleh Ali Ahmed, of Watsonville, died at the scene. After reviewing surveillance video, police extracted images of the suspect and were able to develop leads based on information provided by members of the public. Detectives from the Watsonville Police Department located the
suspect, who was arrested without incident in front of a Eureka home, with the help of the Eureka Police Department, Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office and the Humboldt County Drug Task Force, police said. Watsonville Police Chief Manny Solano will hold a news conference on Monday, Oct. 25, at 11 a.m. Meanwhile, detectives and members of the Santa Cruz County District Attorney’s Office are continuing to follow up on leads as they try to locate additional witnesses and collect evidence.
