Police in Novato and San Rafael are investigating whether the same two men are responsible for an attempted carjacking, a carjacking and a bank robbery committed this week. Two men, one of them armed, tried to steal a 63-year-old man’s vehicle outside the Century Regency Theater at 280 Smith Ranch Road in San Rafael Monday night, San Rafael police spokeswoman Margo Rohrbacher said. The suspects fled when the man started yelling and screaming at them, Rohrbacher said. About five minutes later, at around 10:45 p.m., two men in hooded sweatshirts wearing bandanas over their faces stole a blue Mazda minivan from a 70-year-old woman in the parking lot of the Safeway in the Northgate One shopping center in San Rafael, Rohrbacher said. The suspects threatened the woman but did not show a weapon, she said. On Wednesday, two men wearing dark hooded sweatshirts robbed the US Bank at 1711 Grant Ave. in Novato at about 10:40 a.m., police said. Police found a Mazda minivan used by the robbers a few blocks from the bank on Park Avenue near Fifth Street. Novato police today had not yet confirmed whether the Mazda was the one stolen in San Rafael Monday night.
Novato police Lt. Dave Jeffries said police still had possession of the Mazda as of this morning.
