William Bettencourt is a member of the Santa Cruz Chapter of the Hells Angels. During a criminal investigation, Bettencourt was found to be in possession of confidential DMV information about private parties that appeared to have been supplied by Santa Clara Police Officer Clay Rojas. Bettencourt had, in turn, supplied some of the information to Vivian Rodriguez.
An intensive investigation was immediately undertaken by Santa Clara Police Department Detectives in conjunction with the Office of the District Attorney. An audit of Santa Clara Police Department computer systems confirmed that the information had been obtained by Rojas. Rojas, Bettencourt and Rodriguez were taken into custody today by Santa Clara Police Department Detectives pursuant to arrest warrants issued by the Santa Clara County Superior Court. All three were booked into the Santa Clara County Jail on one count of violating California Penal Code Section 182 (a)(1)-Conspiracy, a felony.
No other Santa Clara Police Department employees have been implicated. Bettencourt’s membership in the Hells Angels was known to Rojas, but the relationship between and the motives of the defendants continue to be investigated.
According to Santa Clara Police Chief Steve Lodge, “This incident tarnishes the good name of our Department and our profession, but at the end of the day, I believe this is an isolated incident limited to one employee. He made some incredibly bad decisions that amount to criminal conduct. The remaining members of my Department are hardworking, ethical, professionals who are just as appalled as I am at this breach of the public’s trust.”
