An accomplice suspect wanted in connection with an assault on a Fremont police officer earlier today was arrested this evening on a BART train in Hayward, a BART spokesman said. At about 5:30 p.m., BART officials were told a suspect in the assault — which involved a man intentionally hitting a police officer on a motorcycle with a stolen van — had boarded a train at the Fremont Station, BART spokesman Jim Allison said. By the time police arrived, the train had left. BART officials stopped the train at the South Hayward Station so it could be searched, Allison said. He said Fremont police found and detained a suspect on the train. The assault began at about 10:30 a.m. when the van was reported stolen, according to a Fremont police sergeant. An officer on his motorcycle spotted it near Warm Spring Road and Mission Boulevard at about 11 a.m., Sgt. Chris Mazzone said. The suspect allegedly saw the officer and hit him on purpose, Mazzone said. The officer was pinned under the motorcycle, which was pinned under the van, a deputy fire chief said. The suspect fled on foot.Allison said service for two southbound BART lines between the South Hayward and Fremont stations was suspended until about 6:15 p.m. while the trains were searched.
