* Richard Messina Arrested in Salinas for Allegedly Robbing Cal’s Central Liquors

A 40-year-old man was arrested Thursday afternoon for trying to rob a liquor store in Salinas, police said. The robbery was reported at about 4 p.m. at Cal’s Central Liquors in the 100 block of Central Avenue, according to police. Richard Messina came into the store, allegedly went behind the counter, grabbed a case of cigarettes and started to leave the store. The store’s owner tried to stop him from escaping and a fight ensued, police said. The store owner, assisted by two customers, detained Messina until police officers arrived. The merchandise was recovered and released back to the owner. Messina was booked into Monterey County jail on suspicion of robbery, police said.
