A 23-year-old fraternity member at University of California at Berkeley was found dead in his room with a gunshot wound early this morning in an apparent suicide, according to Berkeley police. Berkeley police spokeswoman Sgt. Mary Kusmiss said the student was found unresponsive in his room in the 2400 block of Warring Street at 3:11 a.m. today. Another fraternity member found him and then called police.Several officers and two sergeants went to the scene and found the young man suffering from a gunshot wound, and Berkeley Fire Department paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene, Kusmiss said. She said a preliminary investigation by officers concluded that the student’s death was a suicide because there were no evidence of foul play. Alameda County coroner’s deputies took custody of the student’s body and evidence, Kusmiss said. Kusmiss said that because of the sensitive nature of the incident, and the fact that the student’s immediate and extended family and friends need to be notified of his death, police won’t release his name or the name of the fraternity until those processes take place. She said police may release more information after an autopsy of the student’s body is completed.A UC Berkeley spokeswoman said the university doesn’t have any information on the incident at this time.
