Two men were arrested Monday after they allegedly stole a woman’s purse just a few feet from the Palo Alto Police Department’s headquarters, according to police.Santa Clara residents Jose Alfredo Plaza, 18, and Sunnyvale resident Anal Harsha Patel, 21, allegedly threatened the woman with a baseball bat before taking her belongings, police said.The woman was crossing the intersection of Bryant Street and Forest Avenue, near Palo Alto City Hall, at about 8:30 p.m. when a car pulled up to the curb next to her.A man exited the car holding the baseball bat and demanded money, police said. The woman, fearing for her safety, gave the man her purse.The suspect jumped into the waiting vehicle, which drove away, police said.The woman immediately called 911 and gave dispatchers a vehicle description, police said.A Palo Alto police officer spotted the car as it was driving north on East Bayshore Road at Laura Lane, headed into East Palo Alto.Police stopped the vehicle, which contained Plaza and Patel, and the woman identified them during a field lineup.The victim’s property was allegedly found inside their car.Plaza was charged with robbery, conspiracy and driving without a license, according to police. Patel was charged with robbery and conspiracy. Both men were booked into Santa Clara County’s main jail.
