A Novato high school is grieving the loss of a 15-year-old student who was killed in an alleged drunken-driving crash on Friday morning that injured several other teens.Novato Unified School District Superintendent Jan La Torre-Derby this morning identified the student killed as Isaac Brott.La Torre-Derby said Brott, a junior at Novato High School, played for the school’s junior varsity baseball team last season. He also worked as a teacher’s assistant in the school’s main office, she said. Grief counseling is being offered to students today, La Torre-Derby said. A memorial that consists of photos, flowers, posters and notes has been set up on the campus, and all homecoming activities scheduled for this week have been postponed, La Torre-Derby said.
Brott was one of five Novato High School students in a silver 1990 BMW 5 Series that crashed into a tractor-trailer hauling cattle on Novato Boulevard west of San Marin Drive at about 11:50 a.m. Friday.Two of the teens were taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. One, a 17-year-old boy who was initially on life support, is now expected to survive. The other teen was discharged Friday, CHP Officer Chris Rardin said. Two other teenage boys, ages 16 and 17, were taken to Marin General Hospital. The 17-year-old was discharged Friday and the 16-year-old boy, who was driving the car, remains in the hospital, Rardin said. The driver was arrested at Marin General Hospital on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, DUI, DUI with a blood-alcohol level of 0.08 percent or more and driving without a license, according to the CHP.he CHP is not releasing the names of the injured students without their families’ consent, Rardin said. Novato High School students on Saturday formed the letters “IB” with chalk powder used on athletic fields as a tribute to Brott on San Marin Hill near the San Marin High School, La Torre-Derby said.Michael Pritchard, a motivational speaker who uses humor in educational talks to students about the dangers of drinking and driving and other teen issues, will be at Novato High School all day Thursday, La Torre-Derby said.
