A man who robbed a West America Bank branch in Martinez on Wednesday is believed to have also robbed a bank in Lafayette a week earlier, Martinez police Sgt. Jon Sylvia. At 3:12 p.m., Martinez police responded to a report of a bank robbery at the West America Bank at 590 Center Ave. Witnesses said a man entered the bank, displayed a handgun and demanded cash from a teller, Sylvia said. The teller gave the man money and the man ran toward apartment buildings in the 600 block of Center Avenue. Police searched the area, but didn’t find the suspect. He was described as a white male in his mid 20s with a thin build. He had short brown hair and was about 5 feet 6 inches tall. Investigators believe he also robbed a bank in Lafayette on Sept. 2, Sylvia said.
