East Bay Regional Park District police raided a marijuana grow in Las Trampas Regional Wilderness park near Danville and San Ramon on Wednesday morning and destroyed about 1,800 plants, park district spokeswoman Shelly Lewis said.Park district police spotted the growing operation from their helicopter several weeks ago and have been running surveillance on the site for the past three and a half weeks, Lewis said. The crop was located in a narrow canyon off a main trail within the 5,342-acre park but was only visible from the air.The site was well-organized and equipped with pesticides and a generator to pump water to the plants, Lewis said.Investigators believe the plants had a street value of about $225,000.The park district police’s SWAT team raided the site Wednesday morning and arrested one suspect, but a second suspect escaped. The man who was arrested did not speak English and investigators believe he and his partner were hired to guard the site and tend the plants, but that the crop was part of a larger operation, Lewis said.
