* Howard Asuncion of San Jose is inmate who died at Santa Clara County’s Elmwood Correctional Facility

An inmate who died Sunday at Santa Clara County’s Elmwood Correctional Facility has been identified as 35-year-old Howard Asuncion of San Jose, a sheriff’s spokesman said today.It appears Asuncion suffered a heart attack, sheriff’s Sgt. Rick Sung said.An inmate who shared a barrack with Asuncion at the minimum-security jail in Milpitas alerted jail staff that Asuncion was having trouble breathing just before 2 p.m. Sunday, Sung said.Asuncion then stopped breathing, and correctional officers and a nurse administered CPR until paramedics arrived and took over, Sung said.After half an hour of trying to resuscitate Asuncion, they pronounced him dead, Sung said.His official cause of death is pending toxicology results.Asuncion was serving time for drug-related offenses, Sung said.
