The notorious American born drug cartel leader known as “La Barbie” and his associates have been captured by Mexican police officers. Mexican authorities report his cartel was especially violent allegedly decapitating his victims and hanging their bodies from highway overpasses to terrorize anyone that opposed him. He is also wanted by American authorities on alleged trafficking charges. The Mexican military and police have been in a deadly struggle with powerful drug cartels since Mexican President Felipe Calderon declared war on the cartels six days after taking office in 2004. The government has successfully captured or killed many major drug cartel leaders and broken up drug organizations in the war that has claimed the lives of over 28,000 people. La Barbie is facing extradition to the U.S.
