A Vallejo man charged with possessing chemicals capable of making explosive devices, which were found when police discovered the bodies of his wife and another woman in his home, pleaded not guilty this afternoon in Solano County Superior Court. Charles T. Rittenhouse, 72, remains in the Solano County jail on $2 million bail, Deputy District Attorney J. Michael Mullins said. Police found the bodies and the chemicals at the Upland Court home Rittenhouse shared with his wife, 63-year-old Segundia Allen, when they were responding to a missing-person report about Allen. The body of Allen’s friend, 60-year-old Marcaria Smart, was also
found at the home. Vallejo police described Rittenhouse as a “person of interest and an investigative lead” in the women’s murders. Police are also trying to determine if their deaths are connected to Efren Valdemoro, 38, who was an acquaintance of Allen’s and stayed at Allen’s and Rittenhouse’s homes on and off over the past several years. The California Highway Patrol fatally shot Valdemoro Tuesday night when he threatened officers with a meat cleaver inside a Richmond supermarket following a high-speed pursuit, the CHP said. Before the pursuit, Valdemoro met his girlfriend, 46-year-old Cindy Tran, at her job at Devyn’s Salon and Spa in the Glen Cove Shopping Center in Vallejo. Tran’s body was found after the pursuit in the Acura Valdemoro was driving. She had been strangled. Valdemoro is also suspected of bludgeoning 73-year-old Ricardo Sales to death on Aug. 27. Sales’ son, 35-year-old Frederick Sales, has been missing since Saturday. Hercules police spokeswoman Michelle Harrington said Tran owned
and lived at a home on Crepe Myrtle Drive in Hercules with the Sales father and son and one other roommate. Valdemoro often visited, and Harrington said there had recently been friction in the home after Valdemoro warned the elder Sales to stay out
of his relationship. Ricardo Sales worked as a security guard at a Wells Fargo bank located in a Safeway near Devyn’s Salon and Spa. Hercules police today searched the Keller Canyon Landfill at 901 Bailey Road in Pittsburg for Frederick Sales’ body. A hearing on a request to reduce Rittenhouse’s bail is scheduled for Tuesday morning in Solano County Superior Court in Vallejo, and a preliminary hearing has been set for Sept. 17, Mullins said.
