A Sausalito man was sentenced to 12 years in prison Tuesday for killing his girlfriend last year. Chet Turner, 49, pleaded guilty May 3 to voluntary manslaughter of 46-year-old Avril Clary at their Bridgeway apartment on or around April 18, 2009 and to use of a knife in return for a 12-year sentence, Deputy District Attorney A.J. Brady said Wednesday. Two of Turner’s acquaintances testified at a preliminary hearing in September 2009 that Turner said he and Clary were depressed and planned to commit suicide together, Brady said. Turner told the acquaintances he killed Clary, who died of a wound on her neck, as part of a suicide pact, Brady said. Turner also suffered injuries to his neck, Brady said.Turner’s friend testified he asked her to pick him up outside the Sausalito apartment and they drove to her Richmond residence where Turner told her about the suicide pact, Deputy Public Defender Beth Wissing-Healy said in September 2009.The witnesses said Turner said he cut his neck and wrist and woke up but Clary did not.An autopsy determined Clary died of a single clean cut to her neck and there were no signs of a struggle or any other injuries, Wissing-Healy said.Turner’s friend then called Richmond police who notified Sausalito police. Sausalito police found Clary’s body in a bedroom. Richmond police detained Turner until he was arrested by Sausalito police.
