A Middletown woman was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after her sport utility vehicle went down an embankment off state Highway 29 north of Calistoga in Napa County Tuesday afternoon. The California Highway Patrol said the 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee hit a cliff on the right side of the road at about 1:15 p.m, spun around, and went about 60 feet down the embankment a mile north of Tubbs Lane. The CHP and Cal Fire responded. The driver, 48-year-old Juliana Shaeffer, was arrested at the scene and flown by CHP helicopter to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, CHP Officer Ryan O’Day said. She suffered moderate injuries or worse and had to be extricated from the Jeep, O’Day said. The crash closed the road for about 20 minutes, O’Day said.
