The man who allegedly shot a Fremont police officer Friday was arrested in Southern California this afternoon, police said. Andrew Barrientos, 20, was in a San Diego community just north of the border that separates California and Mexico at the time of his arrest,
Oakland police Officer Jeff Thomason said. He was arrested in San Ysidro, which is a community in the south part of San Diego County. Barrientos was arrested about 2 p.m. today on suspicion of critically wounding a Fremont police officer with gunshots and then fleeing the scene, police said. During his escape, the suspect allegedly carjacked someone. The car, a 1999 green Mazda 626, was found in Hayward overnight. The wounded officer, identified today as 39-year-old Todd Young, was taken to Highland Hospital and remained in “critical but stable” condition today, according to Fremont police. Young required 60 units of blood during his surgery, and he is expected to need more procedures in the coming days, police said. He was serving a warrant at 2009 Auseon Ave. in East Oakland at about 2:30 p.m. Friday when the gunfire was exchanged.
