* Jose Garcia Valdez arrested in Salinas at the Oak Park Market trying to cash stolen check

A transient was arrested over the weekend after allegedly trying to cash stolen paychecks at a market near Salinas, according to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office. Jose Garcia Valdez, 46, was arrested at the Oak Park Market at about 10:20 a.m. on Saturday, sheriff’s officials said.Valdez had allegedly forged the name of the owner onto a stolen payroll check and was attempting to cash it at the market, located at 336 San Juan Grade Road just outside of Salinas, according to the sheriff’s office.Having been notified that several stolen checks were in circulation in the area, store employees were able to recognize what was happening and called 911, investigators said.Upon his arrest, Valdez was also found to have violated his probation, authorities said. He was booked into Monterey County Jail.
