A passenger in a stolen vehicle was arrested Saturday night after attempting to allegedly strike a deputy with his elbow, according to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office.A deputy performed a traffic stop shortly after 9 p.m. near Lynn and First streets after observing a lit cigarette allegedly thrown from a 1995 white Chevy Blazer, according to the sheriff’s office. The deputy approached the vehicle and saw the front passenger attempting to hide an open can of beer between his legs, according to the sheriff’s office.The deputy learned during the investigation that the vehicle was stolen.While detaining the driver, Carmelo Bautista Hernandez, 24, of King City, the front passenger exited the vehicle and allegedly refused to obey several commands from the deputy, according to the sheriff’s office.The passenger, 25-year-old Carlos Aragon, also of King City, attempted to strike the deputy in the face with his elbow, according to the sheriff’s office. King City police officers arrived a short time later and assisted with detaining Aragon.Hernandez is suspected to have purchased the SUV from Aragon, the passenger, without knowing the vehicle was stolen, said Sgt. Brian Pickens of the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office.Hernandez was arrested for driving a stolen vehicle, having an open container of alcohol and driving without a valid driver’s license, Pickens said. Aragon was arrested for allegedly resisting arrest, battery against a peace officer and having an open container of alcohol, Pickens said. Both suspects were taken into custody and booked into the Monterey County jail.
