On 08/02/10, approximately 8:02 p.m., an attempted sexual assault occurred at the medical office buildings of Regional Medical Center, 200 Jose Figueres Court. The victim, employed as a janitor, was confronted by the suspect, identified as Steven Cooley, as she worked alone in a restroom. When Cooley exposed himself and attempted to assault the victim, she screamed, causing him to flee the area.
Patrol officers Robert Magdaleno and Jaime Jimenez investigated the assault and were able to retrieve surveillance photos of the suspect. The following night Officers Magdaleno and Jimenez canvassed the area of the incident for possible witnesses, in between calls for service.
While conducting the canvass, the officers saw Cooley, who matched the suspect description, and contacted him. Their investigation revealed Cooley was a sex registrant. The officers developed additional information and based on their investigation, the officers arrested Steven Cooley for his possible involvement in this incident.
Detectives Mike Ghezzi and Sean Morgan from the Departments Sexual Assault Investigation Unit interviewed Cooley, where he made incriminating admissions as to his involvement in this assault. Cooley was booked in the Santa Clara County Main Jail on sexual assault and probation violation charges.
