A man was shot Tuesday night on his 34th birthday as he was walking to a market in Pittsburg, Lt. Brian Addington said today.
The victim was on his way to La Aurora Market in the 200 block of West 10th Street when he was shot in a lower extremity about a block from the market. The man made his way to the store and called for help, Addington said. He was taken by ambulance to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, where he underwent surgery. He was in stable condition today and is expected to survive, Addington said. The motive for the shooting has not been determined, but police believe the victim was targeted. “We don’t think this was a random incident,” Addington said. The victim was well known to police in connection with prior violent and drug-related crimes, Addington said. There was a shooting at the same market in April, but police do not believe the two cases are connected.
In that shooting, two males entered the market shortly before 10 p.m. and attempted to rob the storeowner, who was working as the clerk that night. One of the suspects shot the owner several times and the pair fled. The victim was taken to John Muir Medical Center and is still recovering from his injuries. The suspected shooter in that case, a 17-year-old boy, was arrested on April 29 in Hayward after police there responded to a report of a robbery and saw a vehicle fleeing the area, Addington said. Officers pursued
the vehicle and then chased the car’s occupants when they tried to flee. They caught one, the teen boy. Police believe he was also involved in a string of robberies in the Fremont, Hayward and Newark areas, Addington said. Police afound a gun in the bushes near where the boy was arrested, and shell casings from the gun matched casings found at the Aurora Market. The boy, identified by the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office as Antonio Lamont Askew, allegedly admitted to shooting the storeowner and to committing an armed robbery in Antioch about 45 minutes earlier, Addington said. Askew has been charged in both Alameda and Contra Costa counties.
