A 29-year-old man is in critical condition after being shot while putting his two small children in his vehicle in Salinas Friday afternoon, police said. At about 4:50 p.m., officers in the area of the 900 block of Acosta Plaza heard gunshots, and shortly afterward, police were advised that the victim was nearby in the 700 block of Gee Street. Officers arrived in the area and found the man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the upper torso. He was taken to a local hospital where he is in critical condition today, according to police. The victim was apparently putting his two children, ages 2 and 4, in his vehicle when a suspect approached him with a handgun. The suspect fired several rounds at the victim, a couple of which came within inches of the 2-year-old but did not strike the child, police said. The suspect, described as a male who was possibly wearing a white T-shirt, shorts, long socks and a beanie, fled to a waiting cream or beige sport utility vehicle that was last seen turning onto Rider Avenue from Gee
Street, according to police. The shooting is being investigated as gang-related, police said.
