A man sentenced earlier this month for killing a 9-year-old girl and maiming her father when his motorcycle struck them in a Novato crosswalk was stabbed to death at San Quentin State Prison on Monday. Edward John Schaefer, 44, of Novato, was stabbed by another inmate at 10:35 a.m., said Terry Thornton, spokeswoman for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. The homicide is under investigation, she said. Schaefer was taken to Marin General Hospital, where he died at 9:03 p.m. that night, according to the coroner’s office. Schaefer was sentenced July 13 in Marin County Superior Court to 24 years to life in prison for second-degree murder and mayhem. Schaefer’s Harley Davidson motorcycle struck Melody Osheroff and her father, Aaron Osheroff, 42, as they were crossing San Marin Drive at San Carlos Way in Novato at about 8:45 p.m. on May 27, 2009. His blood-alcohol level was between 0.11 and 0.16 percent at the time of the crash, according to prosecutors. Melody Osheroff died at Oakland Children’s Hospital the next day and her father lost his right leg as a result of the accident. Schaefer, who also was injured in the crash, apologized to the Osheroff family at his sentencing. He said he was devastated when he learned what happened after the effects of morphine he received wore off four days later.
