A man is in custody after allegedly attempting Thursday evening to kill his girlfriend, who is also the mother of his 8-month-old son, according South San Francisco police. At about 5 p.m., 27-year-old Roberto Hernandez-Lopez allegedly strangled his girlfriend while smothering her face at a residence on the 500 block of Third Lane, according to police. The victim escaped momentarily out the door and onto Third Lane, but Lopez caught up with her and attacked her on the street. He allegedly threw her on the ground between two parked cars then choked her and smothered her face again, according to police. An unknown citizen intervened and stopped the assault, allowing the victim to run away. Police were called to the scene at about 5:40 p.m. Lopez was arrested and taken into custody for domestic violence and two counts of attempted murder. The South San Francisco Police Department believes there were witnesses to the attack on Third Lane.
