A law enforcement veteran with more than 20 years of experience has been selected as the new chief of the El Cerrito Police Department. Sylvia Moir, a veteran of the Menlo Park and Sacramento police departments, was chosen to take over the top position in El Cerrito, city officials announced Thursday. Moir will officially assume the role of chief July 12. Before being chosen as chief, Moir was a commander with the Menlo Park Police Department, where she had worked since 2008. Before that, she headed metro operations for the Sacramento Police Department. Moir also teaches leadership courses and is pursuing a doctorate in leadership and organizational change, according to city officials. City Manager Scott Hanin said in a statement that Moir “brings an extensive background in crime prevention, community involvement and leadership development to our city and department.” The El Cerrito Police Department has 43 sworn officers, and responds to an average of 13,000 service calls annually.
