A 19-year-old Richmond man was charged with murder today in connection with a shooting in Richmond late Friday night that killed one man and injured a juvenile, Contra Costa County Deputy District Attorney John Cope said. The suspect, Nickie Donald, has been charged with murder, attempted murder, shooting at an occupied vehicle and shooting from a vehicle. Each charge also carries an enhancement for the use of a firearm, Cope said.Richmond police learned of the shooting when they responded to a report of a crash in the 500 block of 12th Street at about 11 p.m.When they got there, officers found a car that had crashed into a light pole. Two gunshot victims were inside the car, police said. The driver, identified by the Contra Costa County coroner’s office as 20-year-old El Cerrito resident Asama Ayyad, died from his injuries at Kaiser Permanente’s Richmond Medical Center.The second victim, who was shot in the leg, is expected to survive, Richmond police Sgt. Bisa French said.Investigators determined that the shooting happened near 22nd Street and Bissell Avenue, where a white van pulled up alongside the victims’ car and someone inside opened fire, police said.The victims were able to drive as far as the 500 block of 12th Street before they crashed. French said the shooting appears to be a case of mistaken identity.Police arrested four suspects shortly after the shooting – Donald and three juveniles.
