Police continue to investigate the murder of an 80-year-old woman who was discovered dead in her Hayward home from possible gunshot wounds late Sunday afternoon, a spokesman for the Hayward police said. At around 5 p.m., police responded to an emergency call from the woman’s relatives who discovered the dead woman at 25352 Spring Dr., Sgt. Steve Brown said. The family members told police they went to the residence to check on the woman because she uncharacteristically hadn’t been answering her phone. Brown said that preliminary investigations suggest that the woman, who apparently lived alone, died of gunshot wounds. As of 4:15 a.m., the motive for the homicide is unknown, but investigators are still collecting and analyzing evidence from the scene and questioning witnesses, neighbors and relatives, Brown said. The victim’s identity is being withheld pending next of kin notifications.
